1" Sterling Silver pendant with brass bird charm, on 18" Sterling Silver chain. This was the very first design produced in our jewelry programs in Calcutta. The bird is a popular image for freedom for our jewelers.
We started the jewelry training project in 2010 because we were looking for a profession that would enable a high wage and the possibility of life-long learning and professional advancement. Metalsmithing in India has traditionally been done only by men, and members of certain castes. Because we needed female trainers to teach at a rescue shelter, we had to bring our first trainers over from the US and UK, but today the graduates of that first program are able to serve as trainers and managers for the next generation. Our jewelers take pride in being pioneers as some of India's first women goldsmiths! Design by Melissa Tyson
